Internet (General)

Fundamental understanding of underlying Internet technologies and processes. Beginning with telnet, ftp, archie, and email in 1991 and growing into first development experience at the IETF and introduction to whois++, gophe,r and the World Wide Web in 1993. Also began configuring and using Internet services on FreeBSD/Linux in 1993, including hosting NCSA's httpd web server. Initial interest in Internet technology was strongly sparked by William Gibson's _Neuromancer_ and cyberspace articles in "Whole Earth Review: Access to Tools and Ideas".
x86 Computers

Hardware exposure and familiarity began in 1986 using COMPAQ 80x86 and x88 computers for the American Training Center in Cairo, EGYPT where I trained students in the use of DOS, WordStar, and Lotus 1-2-3. In 1991 purchased a 80x88 + 1.44M 3.5" floppy drive + 2400 bps Hayes modem in 1991 which was used to compile programs in Turbo Pascal and remotely access VAX/VMS systems at UNCG. Then moved to a 286 laptop running the COHERENT unix clone for 286 computers, traded that in for a desktop 286 and later upgraded that to a Cyrix 486 which later evolved into Cyrix 5x86, Cyrix 6x86 and is now an AMD K2 400. Operating systems used include: FreeBSD, WFW 3.11, Linux, Windows 95, 98, NT WS 3.51, 4.0, NT SVR 4.0 and Windows 2000. All personal systems, built or evolved from scratch. Three years experience with enterprise deployment and support of Dell Optiplex and Lattitude systems running Windows NT Workstation.

Virtual Network Computer used to graphically control remote computer systems. Used in support environment to remotely operate Administrative priveledged account when troubleshooting support requests in the field. Also used to teleoperate personal systems across the Internet. Familiar with Linux and Win32 versions.
